The Executive Secretary, Dr. Barclays Ayakoroma, says the Nigerian Indigenous Language Programme (NILP) has become one of the policy thrusts NICO has taken to revive, improve and strengthen cross-cultural communication and harmonious relations between various ethnic groups in the country.
Dr. Ayakoroma disclosed this at the closing ceremony of the 4th edition of the Nigerian Indigenous Language Programme, which took place at the Institute’s Training Complex, National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos, on Tuesday, 31st August, 2010.
The Executive Secretary, who was represented by the Director, Orientation & Cultural Affairs, Prince Dele Olusa, said this year's edition has helped the Institute to gauge the responses of numerous people who not only appreciate learning a new Nigerian language, but would wish to do so continually, thus encouraging management to step up on the idea of starting the weekend programme.
According to him, this is to enable many people who are busy with other responsibilities during the working week to avail themselves of the programme during the weekend.
Earlier in her welcome address, Head of the Lagos Liaison office, Mrs. Brigitte Yerima, thanked participants and invited guests for the successful conclusion of the programme, which saw the participants going to markets for the first time to try out their proficiency in their languages of study.
The 4-week long vacation programme saw participants taking instructions in Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba.
Highlights of the closing ceremony were performances in Yoruba and Igbo by the participants. The Etsu of Kwali, Abuja, Nizazo II, Alhaji Shehu Shabban, who was a student of the Yoruba class, also attended the closing ceremony.
