Abuja Carnival to Host Ten Foreign Troupes

Prof. Bakare Ojo RasakiAbout ten foreign troupes will be participating in the next edition of Abuja Carnival, which is scheduled to take place from November 27-30, 2010.

This was disclosed by the Artistic Director/CEO of Abuja Carnival Management Committee, Professor Bakare Ojo Rasaki, at the 34th meeting of Chie Executives of Culture (CEC) of the Federation, which held at the Governor’s Office Annex, Wellington Bassey Way, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Prof. Rasaki informed CEC that Trinidad & Tobago and Canada are among seven Countries that have confirmed their intent to participate in the Carnival.

According to him, three events: Children’s Fiesta, Food fair, and Cultural Nite, would be handled as competitive events. For the Food fair, emphasis will not be on traditional cuisine, though there is need to encourage various participants to explore our diverse traditional methods and materials for cooking. Rather, emphasis will be placed on innovation and creativity. “We want to see how participant(s)/contestant(s) will be thinking global, but as well be acting local,” he posited.

The “Cultural Nite,” a novel experiment introduced only in the 2009 edition of the Carnival, has given leverage to last year’s “best three” troupes for performance trips abroad as ‘prize.’ In addition, the winning three states will perform alongside the ten Foreign Troupes invited to the Carnival. It is because of this success, according to the Prof. Bakare, the “Cultural Nite” is retained in the competitive category.

It will be recalled that the Abuja Carnival started in 2005, and the 2010 edition is the fifth in the series; it is also the second edition Prof. Rasaki will be handling as the Artistic Director.
