Uyo, capital city of Akwa Ibom State, will host the 2010 edition of the annual National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFEST). To this end, attendees to the just concluded 34th Meeting of Chief Executives of Culture (CEC) of the Federation, made up of chief executives of federal cultural parastatals, Councils for Arts & Culture and History & Culture Bureaux of the 36 States and the FCT, embarked on a guided tour of venues and facilities as their last act to round up the 3-day programme at Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The Meeting, which held at the Multi-purpose Hall of Governor’s Office Annex on Wellington Bassey Way, Uyo, under the chairmanship of the Executive Director of the National Council for Arts & Culture (NCAC), Mr. M. M. Maidugu, was declared open by the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency Engr. Patrick Ekpotu.
Strategies for dynamic administration of culture were exhaustively discussed, and the Draft Syllabus for NAFEST 2010 was considered and approvals given for competitive and non-competitive events, among other things.
Based on submissions from the Artistic Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Abuja Carnival, Prof. Ojo Bakare, at the Meeting, CEC members-in-council pledged their commitment to the successful hosting of this year’s edition of the Carnival, christened “Jubilee Carnival” with the theme: “Celebrating Nigeria in Our Year of Jubilee.”
The Chief Executives of Culture also used the opportunity to express appreciation to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GCFR), for appointing a seasoned cultural administrator and scholar, Dr. Chris Iyimoga, as a Commissioner in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
While assuring the President that Dr. Iyimoga’s appointment is well deserved, the body urged the INEC Commissioner to discharge his duties to our fatherland with the fear of God and be above board always as a true Ambassador of the Culture sector.
The Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio, ably represented by his Deputy, His Excellency Engr. Patrick Ekpotu, on behalf of the Government and good people of Akwa Ibom State, treated delegates to a Cocktail at the prestigious Le Meridien Hotel and Suites, Uyo, to mark the end of 34th CEC Meeting.
The Executive Director, National Council for Arts & Culture, Mr. M. M. Maidugu, Executive Secretary, NICO, Dr. Barclays Foubiri Ayakoroma, and the Acting Artistic Director, National Troupe of Nigeria, Mr. Martins Adaji, were among top cultural administrators that received gifts from the Deputy Governor.
