Members of the Meeting of Chief Executives of Culture (CEC) of the Federation have been called upon to support programmes of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), in order to sustain mutually beneficial relationships.
The Executive Secretary of the Institute, Dr. Barclays Ayakoroma, made this call while briefing CEC members on activities of the Institute at the recently concluded 33rd meeting of the forum, at the Aminu Isa Kontagora Cultural Centre, Makurdi, Benue State.
Dr. Ayakoroma said that it is in the bid to give culture a pride of place in Nigeria that NICO is planning 3-day workshop on “Designing and Managing a Cultural Website” to enhance the Internet presence of the sector in a globalised economy.
According to him, many websites in the sector have not made any impact because they are dormant, like banners that have been placed on the roadside and are left until they are torn; and that they are designed and managed by persons who probably do not understand the essence of animating such sites through constant updating to increase traffic.
He noted that the proposed workshop is expected to give parastatals in the sector, and other interested MDAs, to rebrand their presence on the global information highway, and explore the area of Internet marketing.
Also presenting memos on “Workshop on Promoting Nigerian Dress Culture,” “Participation in NICO Training School,” and “Production of Quiz Wazobia,” an Indigenous Language TV programme, Dr. Ayakoroma said that NICO can only realise these and other programmes if states collaborate with the Institute, especially at the zonal level.
He assured members that the Institute is doing everything possible to ensure that the curriculum of the Training School is reviewed with adequate input from seasoned cultural administrators and scholars, to ensure that courses offered remain relevant to the growth of the culture sector.
Dr. Ayakoroma noted that this is imperative as the programmes offered in the school are geared towards enhancing job performance of staff, as well as giving them the leverage to progress in their various cadres.
