The Executive Secretary of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), Dr. Barclays Ayakoroma paid a visit to the Federal Character Commission recently.
The Executive Secretary who was at the Federal Character Commission to attend an interactive session with members of the Employment, Labour and Productivity Committee also used the opportunity to pay courtesy call on the Executive Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Shuaibu Oba Abdulraheem.
At the interactive session chaired by Dr. Femi Ogunsola, the Executive Secretary and members of the Committee exchanged ideas on ways and means of complying with Federal Character principle which “promotes equal employment opportunities to all citizens of Nigeria and fair and equitable representation of all the Geo-political units of Nigeria in all establishments without sacrificing the requirement for merit”.
The Executive Secretary was advised by the committee to take necessary steps to correct the observed imbalances in the recent recruitment exercise in the Institute.
Responding, the Executive Secretary of NICO, Dr. Barclays Ayakoroma said that upon assumption of office in November 2009, he observed the inadequacies pointed out by the Committee and that they were being addressed.
According to him, he had put in place a post engagement/staff verification committee to assess the qualifications and core competence of the newly engaged staff. He said the report from the committee will determine the number vacancies the establishment will declare.
Dr. Ayakoroma noted that subsequent employments will follow due process, and that the Commission will be adequately informed for proper guidance and that only those who will be useful to the establishment would be considered for employment.
Present at the meeting were Alhaji Ibrahim Issa Ladan (Member Representing Niger State), Chief (Mrs.) O. O. Onimole (Member Representing Ogun), Mr. Abayomi Oyelola, mni (Director, Admin. & Finance, NICO), and Mrs. Maria Okpuzor (Prin. Admin. Officer, NICO).
