Federal Character Commission Boss Pledges To Support NICO

The Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission, Prof. Shuaibu Oba Abdulraheem has promised to do whatever is required to make the management of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO) to succeed in upholding the Federal Character principles in NICO.

Prof. Abdulraheem made the pledge during a courtesy call on him by the Executive Secretary of NICO, Dr. Barclays Ayakoroma.

Prof. Abdulraheem used the occasion to congratulate Dr. Ayakoroma for his appointment as the Executive Secretary of NICO.

He commended the Executive Secretary for starting on a positive note by having a good working relationship with the Commission very early in his tenure. He promised that the Commission would work with the Executive Secretary in promoting the Federal Character principles.

Earlier, Dr. Ayakoroma, who was at the Federal Character Commission to attend an interactive session with the Employment, Labour and Productivity Committee of the Commission, intimated the Executive Chairman on the steps he had taken since assumption of duties in November 2009 to address the imbalances in the employment profile of the Institute. He informed his host that he had set-up a verification committee to look at the deficiencies in the said employment exercise with view to correcting them.

Dr. Ayakoroma stated further that most of the newly employed staff have qualifications that were clearly outside NICO’s area of competence. According to the Executive Secretary, the committee will examine all the issues and make recommendations on how best to address them. Dr. Ayakoroma stated categorically that those that may not fit-in would be transferred to parastatals where they would be relevant.

Dr.  Ayakoroma stated that he fully subscribes to the Federal Character Principles which promote fairness, equity and justice. As a result of his conviction, he rationalized, he had personally done a statistical analysis of NICO Staff profile and had identified the disadvantaged states that would receive special attention in future recruitment exercise.

The Executive Secretary promised to adequately inform the Commission whenever recruitment exercises are contemplated so that the Institute will be properly guided in consonance with existing regulations.

Also present at the meeting were some Management staff of NICO and Federal Commissioners of the Federal Character Commission.
