Membership of any association in any work place or establishment is a prerogative of an individual, in so far as there is freedom of association and such a union does not operate outside the corporate focus and goals of the Organization in which it exists.
The Executive Secretary of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), Dr. Barclays Ayakoroma, made this assertion while exchanging views with some officers from State and National Councils of Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU), in his Office in Abuja.
While counting on RATTAWU’s support to achieve the Institute’s set objectives, the NICO Boss intimated that the Institute’s Indigenous Language Quiz programme in 3 major Nigerian Languages, including English, will soon hit Nigerian Television air-waves.
Earlier, Comrade Olu Jacob, National Deputy President of RATTAWU who led the eight-man delegation, as a seasoned cultural administrator, Dr. Ayakoroma’s appointment as Executive Secretary of NICO, can be likened to that of the Directors-General of both NTA and FRCN, describing them as “insiders” and not politicians.
Speaking further, Comrade Jacob who represented the Union’s National President, recounted the effort of the Leadership of RATTAWU, putting spirited fight to achieve positive result on the monetization issue on behalf of members of the Union.
Consequently, he urged NICO, with over 90% of culture workers to return to the RATTAWU fold, while imploring the Management of National Institute for Cultural Orientation to give RATTAWU Members proper and fair deal in its scheme of things, including adequate welfare.
