Courses Offered

    * Diploma Course (Intensive) in Cultural Administration - 12months

    * Post Graduate Diploma in Cultural Administration - 12 months

Facilitating Staff
The Facilitators for programmes include academic staff under the employment of NICO, experienced lecturers and consultants drawn from Nigerian Universities, as well as experts from the culture sector and other reputable Training Institutes. They will, from time to time, be supported by Guest Lecturers and art practitioners in the public sector.

Certificates
At the end of twelve (12) months, participants for the programmes would be awarded Diploma and Postgraduate Dilpoma in Cultural Administration, respectively.

Facilities
For now, most of the training programmes of the Institute are co-ordinated at the Liaison Office in Lagos at the NICO Complex located at the National Theatre Annex, Iganmu, Lagos. The NICO Complex has three (3) moderately sized lecture halls, a well-equipped library, Internet facility, as well as other small functional rooms - all fully air-conditioned. The location of the Complex is serene and very ideal for intellectual activity; and its closeness to the National Theatre also means that students can have ready and easy access to a lot of practical cultural activities around the Theatre and Artists' Village/National Gallery of Modern Art close by.

Teaching Method
For the purpose of NICO programmes, these will include among others: lectures, discussions, field trips and case studies, which would be interspersed from time to time with techniques like talks or demonstrations as the need arises.

Accommodation
For now the programmes are non-residential but the Institute is making effort to secure rented apartments, which can accommodate participants. Participants may however wish to make their own personal accommodation arrangements.

Field School
As part of both programmes, participants would also be exposed to field trips or excursions to Tourists sites or other places of interest to broaden their views and knowledge about Nigerian cultural life. Students are expected to submit reports on their field experiences.

Method of Application
NICO courses are open to cultural workers, officers in the Federal and State Civil Service, Parastatals, the private sector and indeed anybody who is interested in a career in the culture sector. Interested candidates should apply through their organisations for nomination and sponsorship, while private individuals can apply directly to the Institute. All applications should reach the Institute at least two months before commencement of each programme. The institute will send brochures of courses and nomination forms to organizations every year. Interested organizations can therefore apply for nomination forms for their Staff each year. They are also to ensure that nomination forms are returned promptly before the specified deadline

You are welcome to the Website of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO).
The National Institute for Cultural Orientation, a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation was established by Act 93 of 1993.

The Institute has the primary responsibility of harnessing our cultural resources to meet the challenges of social integration, peace, unity and national development. It also serves as vital force for promoting Nigeria’s programme of Cultural Diplomacy and energizing the various cultural establishments in the new direction advocated by Nigeria’s Cultural Policy and the  World Decade for Cultural Development (1988-1997) declared by the United Nations.

NICO has a vision to be the apex and leading Cultural Training Institute in Nigeria and Nigeria’s contribution to world progress and civilization through research and documentation and cultural assets and services, both tangible and intangible.

NICO also has the mandate to train cultural officers, motivators and communicators who would be grounded in Nigerian cultural realities, philosophy and practices that are essential for national integration, peace, unity and development in a multi-ethnic nation.
